Got to Sihanoukville at about 1pm and a taxi bike to the wrong end of the beach. Boiling hot, tramping around, sweating like hell and eventually got into a little bamboo hut with a cold shower!! (Could be dodgy but I hold my concerns from Diane!!)
Head to beach for well earned swimming and a cool down. That evening we eat barbecued fish on the beach at one of the many restaurants on the sand. Early night from long travel. Not long before my fears are realised as the hut is a mozzie hellhole straight out of an episode of Tenko. After getting Diane out of the hut, I empty a tin of death spray through the door and retreat to a safe distance. Returning after 3 minutes, there are dead mosquitoes all over the floor. We eventually get to sleep to the sounds of the local rave, mice running around on the roof and cockerels starting up at 4.30am!! You can't get the highs without the lows - it's all good.
Left the mosquito hell dump and moved to a new pad first thing in the morning with hot shower, TV and nice people. Hallelujah!
Dumping the bags we book straight on a snorkelling trip about to leave; just snorkelling and not diving. I say 'just' but it was one of the best days snorkelling I have ever done. The fish were amazing. Good corals - hard and soft. At the first dive site, Diane suddenly screamed, started treading water and pulling at her bikini. She had swum into a swarm of spawning sea urchins. The water was full of tiny glass like needles about 5mm long. They drift in the current, settle to the bottom and eventually form new sea urchins. Spent 20 minutes back on the boat, picking them out of Diane's cozzie. Never ever seen them before.
Next day, hired a scooter and headed out of town. Miles of sandy roads along the coast and then into the real rural countryside of Cambodia. Water buffalo, charcoal ovens, kids playing and fields of crops. On the way back got waved over to join four old boys. Good fun and ended up necking some local firewater. Didn't chance my luck at a second crossing over the rickety bamboo bridge after that!!
